Prince Maurice of Nassau-Siegen

Maurice of Nassau-Siegen

During the Dutch occupation of the sugar producing regions of Pemambuco, Prince Maurice of Nassau-Siegen brought a group of artists and scholars to Brazil, who stayed from 1637 to 1644. One member of the group was Georg Marggraf, who produced the wall map of Brazilian territory occupied by Holland, engraved in Amsterdam in 1647. In partnership with Willem Piso, Marggraf also produced the first Historia Natura/is Brasiliae, which was published by Prince Maurice on his return to Holland in 1644.

View of Recife and its Port (Fig.3), by Gillis Peeters, is a panoramic view showing the naval squadron and the Dutch fortifications, getting its effect from the stretch of land running diagonally across the picture. The figures and the ruins in the foreground show a certain Italian influence.
